Kauai Traffic Alert

All traffic going to or from the area North of Kauai's Wailua River is impacted

The Kauai Department of Transportation has announced that the cane haul bridge (ask me if you don't know what that is) over the Wailua River will be closed until late summer as it is expanded from one lane to two.  In addition to that, the parallel main bridge will be restricted until January 28 making for a massive traffic nightmare for those trying to go between Kapaa and Lihue.

Here on Kauai, we only have one main road with some feeders and a few areas with bypass roads.  Unfortunately here is no bypass for this area unless one does it by boat or helicopter.  Those traveling from the Princeville and Kapaa areas to the airport should allow a few extra hours for the trip for the rest of January.  Long term, having 4 lanes instead of 3 should help smooth traffic in this congested area of Kauai.

Hey Bill, welcome back to Hawaii.  Sugar cane used to be our largest industry and the island has many private "cane haul" roads & bridges so that the trucks didn't have to use public roads.  As that industry came to an unfortunate end, the state bought some of the property to use for public roads.  The bridge in question is one of them.

Bill--I like that thought, it sounds very "Hawaiian".
