Tsunami warning for Hawaiian Islands

I woke early this morning and learned of the devasting Chile earthquake.  I extend my sympathies to all those who are impacted by this tragedy.

Hawaii is under a Tusnami warning with the first wave expected at 11:19 AM today and subsequent waves for 6-8 hours afterwards.  The Tsunami sirens went off at 6 AM and I'm hearning reports of people lining up for gas and groceries.  TV coverage showed one store that had a limit on the amount of SPAM people can buy.  The Hilo airport is reported closed and I would assume Honolulu airport will close since it's only 13 feet above sea level but I haven't heard yet.

I'll issue other reports as the day progresses.

Aloha

Stay safe -- the spam limit was funny--- only in Hawaii!

SPAM is a huge seller in Hawaii and it's often stacked at the ends of the grocery aisles, floor to ceiling.  I don't eat SPAM but that's a personal preference not shared by many in the islands.  Certainly it makes a good emergency food as it keeps pretty much forever and doesn't require cooking.  Maybe I should stock up just in case?

We love Hawaii and are thinking of you all.  Please keep us posted.

I happen to like spam but that is also a personal preference.

Aloha and stay safe!!!

Hi Barbara.  It does taste good doesn't it!  I grew up in a neighbor state of yours where bumper stickers said "meat makes a meal".  I try to focus more on fish and chicken now but that midwestern heritage will never totally leave me.

Hi Ann.  We're all hoping it will be simply a photo event and not anything dangerous.  We'll know in another hour.

Hey Richard I was sure relieved to hear you only got smaller waves than expected and no damage.

Thanks Bill.  I'm sure no one wanted damage but many were disappointed that there wasn't at least something more than tide changes to see.
